Chapter 15: The Downswing

Pro Tips (from the book!)

• Proper setup and backswing are a necessary first step to practice before diving into the details of the downswing.

• The downswing is led by the lower body, specifically the legs, hips and core. The upper body (shoulders and hands) are not the leading movers of the backswing but rather a guide.

• The first move of the downswing is to push your body weight from the right side of your body (inside of right foot) to the left side. After shifting the weight, turn your lower body and let your upper body follow naturally. Ben Hogan’s “free ride” drill – where you imagine your upper body is frozen but your lower body movement can begin to move your upper body and club towards the ball.

• Lower body rotation should be as if someone were to grab your left pocket and pull it

towards the target. This motion will begin to move your belly button from pointing at your right foot to start pointing at the ball and eventually all the way to the target. Pivoting your back foot can help.
