Chapter 14: Clubface Position in the Backswing

Pro Tips (from the book!)

• The clubface position at the top can be defined as open, closed or square. A square face gives you the best chance to hit straight shots, and it is better to be slightly closed as opposed to open at this position.

• An open clubface is one in which you can see the back of the clubface from down the line and the toe is pointing left of the club shaft.

• A closed clubface is one in which you can see the front of the clubface from down the line and the toe is pointing right of the club shaft.

• A square clubface is one in which the clubhead is in between the open and closed position with the toe in line with the club shaft. A square clubface at the top allows you to swing freely down to the ball while giving you the best chance to hit straight shots.

• To practice this, take slow backswings and pause at the top. Observe your clubface angle. It can also be a good idea to over-exaggerate open and closed faces as this gives you examples of what to avoid.

• Turning hands on your grip clockwise into a stronger grip is likely to close the face. Turning hands counterclockwise into a weaker grip is likely to open the face. Play with this until it feels right!
